Kagrart

Kagrart is an initiative for calligraphy and allied art forms, based in Calicut. Set in the serene old-world charm of the south beach in Calicut, the historic port town that was called “the city of truth” by seafaring Arab traders centuries back, with beautiful sea view and remarkable interior incorporating design elements from the local and global Muslim cultural heritage, Kagrart is a soulful bliss.

A space dedicated to calligraphy has been a long-term dream of calligrapher KareemGraphy, the founder who currently shuttles between Calicut and Doha, and his close friends. Kagrart is committed to the growth and spread of calligraphy in general and Arabic calligraphy in particular, in this part of the world. It caters to the needs of calligraphy lovers, learners and explorers by providing master sessions by reputed calligraphers, distributing high-quality materials needed for the art, conducting exhibitions of excellent works, and organizing workshops, talks and courses online and offline. It also plans creative collaborations with like-minded organisations, institutions and companies in the future.

Objectives

We aim at propagating the art of calligraphy in and beyond Kerala, with a due emphasis on classic traditions and an inevitable comprehension of contemporary trends. We also aim at exploring and encouraging art and heritage for social empowerment, unification, and cross-cultural understanding. The socio-spiritual value of art and culture is of prime significance at Kagrart.

Kagrart Gallery

Kagrart offers a gallery space where excellent calligraphy works, paintings, installations and other artworks can be exhibited on a regular basis. Artists can approach Kagrart to hire the space for their shows. Kagrart also plans to curate art shows from and beyond Kerala with relevant and suitable themes.

Kagrart Institute

One of the central missions of Kagrart is to equipping talented youngsters with the best skills in calligraphy, with an emphasis on classical traditions and without ignoring contemporary approaches. Based on a time-tested and systematically developed curriculum and pedagogy, Kagrart routinely conducts workshops in calligraphy, design, and other allied art forms. Reputed and eminent practitioners and masters will be invited to facilitate workshops. Apart from workshops, Kagrart also offers short-term online and offline courses, seminars, lecture sessions, heritage walks, screenings etc. Coping up with the digital tools and platforms, Kagrart incorporates contemporary approaches, too.
